The South African Navy is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Artisan to join its team at the historic Naval Base in Simon’s Town. This is a fantastic opportunity for a qualified telecommunications professional to play a vital role in maintaining critical communication infrastructure for the Navy.
Key Requirements
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- An appropriate Trade Test Certificate.
- A minimum of 5 years of post-qualification experience as an Artisan.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Special Skills: Experience in telephone network installation, maintenance, and repairs of lines and instruments is a distinct advantage.
- Proficiency in using power tools and technical instruments.
- Sound knowledge of Main Distribution Frames, cable jointing, Digital (e.g., VoIP) and analogue telephone systems.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety Regulations and legal compliance.
- Ability to compile technical reports, supervise staff, and manage workflow.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, planning, organisation, and team leadership skills.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of critical tasks, including:
- Executing and monitoring voice technical service provision operations for the SAN ICT telephone network.
- Providing telephone network cable reticulation services and technical support for instruments.
- Ensuring fixed-line connectivity for both local and foreign vessels.
- Acting as a distribution account holder for the technical section.
- Maintaining accurate cable records and controlling the job card system.
- Ordering and managing stores, and supervising contractors.
- Communicating effectively with contractors and performing ad-hoc tasks as required.
