Are you a seasoned Professional Engineer ready to take on a pivotal role in national defence? The South African Navy’s Fleet Command Headquarters is seeking a highly skilled and registered Senior Weapons Systems Engineer to join its elite Naval Engineering Services division in the historic town of Simon’s Town. This is a rare opportunity to apply your expertise to critical marine design and systems engineering projects, ensuring the operational readiness and technological advancement of the SA Navy’s fleet.

About the Role

This senior position places you at the heart of the Navy’s engineering operations. You will be responsible for generating engineering instructions, leading concept and system designs, and providing essential acceptance services for advanced weapons systems. Your work will directly contribute to national security and maritime defence capabilities.

Key Requirements

To be considered for this prestigious role, candidates must meet the following non-negotiable criteria:

  • Qualifications: An Engineering Degree (B Eng / BSC Eng) or relevant equivalent qualification.
  • Registration: Current compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer.
  • Experience: A minimum of 6 years of post-qualification engineering experience.
  • Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is essential.
  • Advantageous: Proven post-graduate experience in a marine design environment.

Essential Skills & Knowledge:

The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with exceptional leadership abilities. Key competencies include:

  • Superior verbal and written communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering prescripts, policy documents, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in compiling EC Work Packages, Test and Trial procedures, and Integrated Logistic Support Plans (ILS/OSBL’s).
  • Strong project management, financial management, and conflict management skills.
  • Ability to draft, read, and understand complex technical drawings and documents.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the MS Office suite.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will be critical to the success of the Navy’s engineering endeavours:

  • Generate authoritative Weapons Systems Engineering instructions, advice, and design standards.
  • Lead the development of innovative concept and system designs.
  • Provide engineering acceptance services for new and existing systems.
  • Ensure equipment standardization across the fleet.
  • Provide expert project and task management services.
  • Manage and lead the Weapons Systems Engineering Sub-Section, fostering a high-performance culture.

  • A detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV) with full particulars of your training, qualifications, competencies, knowledge, and experience.
  • Do not submit certified copies with your initial application. Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified documents (not older than six months) before the interview.
