About the Role
The Department of Labour is seeking a dedicated and qualified professional to join the team at the Mthatha Labour Centre as a Senior Inspector specializing in Occupational Health and Safety. This is a critical role that ensures workplace safety and compliance with national labour legislation, making a tangible difference in the working lives of people in the Eastern Cape region.
Requirements
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- A Senior Certificate (Matric).
- A 3-year recognized qualification (NQF Level 6) in Occupational Hygiene or Environmental Health (SAQA recognition is essential).
- A valid driver’s license.
- Registration with a relevant professional body is advantageous but not compulsory.
Required Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of Departmental policies and procedures, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (and its amendments, including Regulations 21 and incorporated South African National Standards), the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, and the Unemployment Insurance Act.
Essential Skills: The ideal candidate will possess strong planning and organizing, communication, computer literacy, facilitation, interpersonal, conflict handling, negotiation, problem-solving, interviewing, presentation, innovation, and analytical skills.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Independently planning and conducting inspections to ensure compliance with the OHS Act, its Regulations, and incorporated Standards.
- Verifying employer registration with the UIF and COIDA.
- Investigating and finalizing incidents and complaints related to OHS, which may include appearing in court as a state witness.
- Conducting proactive inspections and compiling detailed reports on findings.
- Planning and executing advocacy campaigns on labour legislation and analysing their impact.
- Contributing to regional inspection plans and compiling consolidated statistical reports.
