The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is seeking a highly qualified and experienced individual to fill the critical role of Control Environmental Officer, specializing in Enforcement and Criminal Investigations. This is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of protecting South Africa’s natural heritage.
About the Role
This senior position is central to the fight against environmental crime. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading complex investigations, enforcing compliance with environmental legislation, and building national capacity for criminal investigations. You will act as an Environmental Management Inspector (EMI), often referred to as a \”Green Scorpion,\” wielding significant authority to uphold South Africa’s environmental laws.
Key Requirements
To be considered for this challenging role, you must meet the following criteria:
- A four-year (4) degree (NQF 8) in Environmental Management/Science or an equivalent qualification in a related field.
- A minimum of six (6) years of post-qualification experience.
- A deep understanding of the environmental compliance and enforcement legal framework, including the Criminal Procedures Act.
- Knowledge of environmental policies, legislation, constitutional law, and administrative law.
- Excellent legal drafting, investigative, and evidence-gathering skills.
- Strategic, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- A valid driver’s license and a willingness to travel extensively.
- Advantageous: Completion of the Environmental Management Inspectors (EMI) course, knowledge of the criminal justice system, and experience in integrating law and science.
Key Responsibilities
Your duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Undertaking investigations into offences under environmental legislation for both administrative enforcement and criminal prosecution.
- Carrying out the functions of an Environmental Management Inspector (EMI).
- Promoting and building national enforcement capacity for criminal investigations.
- Resolving complex problems related to legislative provisions and enforcement actions.
- Communicating with complainants, transgressors, and key stakeholders such as the NPA and SAPS.
- Establishing and maintaining internal controls and reporting systems.
