About the Role

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) is seeking three highly qualified and dynamic engineers to join their team as Inspectors of Mine Equipment. This is a critical role ensuring health and safety compliance within the mining industry. The successful candidates will be responsible for conducting audits, investigating accidents, and enforcing regulations to maintain the highest safety standards on mines.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • A National Diploma in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (NQF Level 6).
  • A Certificate of Competency (GCC) for Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (Mines).
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in mine equipment.
  • A valid driver’s licence.

Essential Knowledge:

  • Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and Regulations and Legal Proceedings.
  • Mining Engineering, specifically Mine Equipment (e.g., Winders, Boilers, Plants).
  • Hazard and risk management principles.
  • Public Service Staff Code and DMPR Policies.

Key Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to interpret and apply the MHSA and other relevant policies.
  • Strong management, planning, leading, and organisational skills.
  • Excellent report writing and formulation abilities.
  • Good interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency in language and computer applications.
  • Must be an innovative thinker with strong analytical and decision-making skills.

Note: Shortlisted candidates will undergo practical exercises and integrity assessments.

Key Performance Areas (Duties)

The successful applicant will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Conduct and report on underground, shaft, and surface audits and inspections of plants, structures, and mining equipment.
  • Take necessary enforcement action where contraventions are found.
  • Investigate and report on mine-related accidents, contraventions, and complaints.
  • Test, license, and report on equipment such as winders, lifts, chairlifts, and boilers.
  • Serve on boards of examiners.
  • Provide input on mine closures, prospecting rights, mining rights, and environmental management plans (EMPs).
  • Contribute to regional reports and the revision of machinery regulations and standards.
