About the Role

The Mpumalanga Department of Health is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to fill the pivotal role of Assistant Director for Environmental Health. This position is based in the beautiful city of Mbombela and offers a challenging opportunity to shape and implement critical public health policies and programs that protect communities across the Ehlanzeni District.

Key Requirements

To be considered for this senior position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • A Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent.
  • An appropriate qualification that allows for registration with the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Environmental Health Practitioner in 2025.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in the profession after HPCSA registration, with five (5) years of this experience at a supervisory or management level.
  • In-depth knowledge of strategic planning, financial management, budgeting, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • A solid understanding of Environmental Health Services policies and legislation.
  • Strong strategic leadership, programme management, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Computer literacy and a valid driver’s licence are essential.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be entrusted with a wide range of duties, including:

  • Developing and implementing environmental health policies, guidelines, and standards.
  • Providing capacity building and support to sub-districts and municipalities on health legislation.
  • Ensuring implementation and compliance with the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), including developing Environmental Management Plans.
  • Facilitating and integrating Health Impact Assessments within environmental impact processes.
  • Coordinating water quality monitoring, sanitation, and hygiene promotion programs.
  • Building the capacity of Environmental Health Practitioners and community health workers.
  • Performing any other related duties as directed by management.
