Position Details

  • Post: Medical Specialist Grade 1 to 3 (Paediatrics)
  • Chief Directorate: Metro Health Services
  • Centre: New Somerset Hospital, Western Cape

Remuneration Package

The salary is competitive and aligned with your experience level:

  • Grade 1: R1,271,901 per annum
  • Grade 2: R1,451,214 per annum
  • Grade 3: R1,680,780 per annum

Requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

Minimum Qualifications & Registration:

  • An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Paediatrics.
  • Current registration as a Medical Specialist in Paediatrics with the HPCSA.

Experience Required:

  • Grade 1: No experience required after registration as a Specialist.
  • Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years of appropriate experience after registration.
  • Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years of appropriate experience after registration.

Inherent Job Requirements:

  • A valid Code B/EB driver’s licence and a willingness to travel.
  • Willingness to perform teaching, outreach, and overtime duties in paediatrics and neonatology.

Key Competencies and Skills:

  • A good understanding of regional and district-level child health services and programmes.
  • Knowledge of the statutory framework, including Healthcare 2030, Best Practice Criteria, and National Core Standards.
  • Experience in inpatient, outpatient, and emergency care of critically ill paediatric and neonatal patients.
  • Experience with children who have neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • Experience in teaching and training undergraduate medical students.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and organisational skills.

Key Performance Areas (Duties)

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Delivering high-quality clinical services in Paediatrics and Neonatology at a specialist level.
  • Ensuring effective clinical governance and management within the Paediatric department.
  • Conducting academic teaching and training on the UCT joint platform.
  • Participating in essential outreach programmes to extend care to the community.
  • Managing various administrative portfolios and developing, conducting, and supervising research projects.
