About the Role

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated professional to fill the position of Control Biodiversity Officer Grade A, specializing in the Wildlife Economy. This is a pivotal role focused on driving economic growth within the biodiversity and ecotourism sectors, supporting SMMEs, and ensuring the sustainable use of South Africa’s natural resources.

Requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • A four-year Degree (NQF Level 8) or equivalent qualification in Environmental Management, Natural Sciences, Human Sciences, or a related field.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of post-qualification experience in a relevant field.
  • In-depth knowledge of key legislation: NEMA, NEMBA, and the GMO Act, including their related regulations and policies (especially concerning Alien and Invasive Alien Species).
  • Understanding of environmental risk assessments for GMOs and Alien Invasive Species (AIS).
  • Knowledge of government administrative procedures (PSA & PSR), financial management (PFMA), and procurement processes.
  • Experience in policy development and implementation.
  • Knowledge of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity and the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

Essential Skills & Attributes:

  • Excellent planning, communication, negotiation, and report-writing skills.
  • Strong organisational ability and computer literacy.
  • Proven leadership skills and the ability to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Innovative, proactive, and able to work under extreme pressure.
  • Ability to gather and analyse information and manage conflict.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Providing critical support to Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) operating within the wildlife and ecotourism sectors.
  • Identifying and entering into partnerships to facilitate SMME growth and implement Biodiversity Lab outcomes.
  • Coordinating the development and implementation of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with academia and research bodies.
  • Coordinating the reporting on job creation and economic contributions from the wildlife sector.
  • Participating in the development and review of the Biodiversity Economy Satellite Account.
  • Monitoring, reviewing, and evaluating the progress of implementation plans.
  • Assisting SMMEs to comply with relevant legislation, regulations, and certification standards.
  • Providing technical support and coordinating stakeholder engagement on Wildlife Economy activities.
