This is a 24-month contract opportunity for a Senior Registrar in the Paediatric Intensive Care sub-specialty at the renowned Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, affiliated with the University of Cape Town. The successful candidate will receive a salary of R1,271,901 per annum and will be responsible for clinical service delivery (including a 16-hour commuted overtime commitment), teaching undergraduate students and staff, and conducting research towards an MPhil in Paediatric Critical Care. Applicants must be registered with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Paediatrics, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, or Paediatric Surgery, and possess an FCPaed and/or MMed (Paed). REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum educational qualification: Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as Medical Specialist in Paediatrics, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Paediatric Surgery.
  • Registration with a professional council: Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Paediatrics, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Paediatric Surgery.
  • Inherent requirements of the job: FCPaed and/MMed (Paed).
  • A valid driver’s licence.
  • Participate in commuted overtime within the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health Competencies (knowledge/skills): Experience in general paediatrics Good interpersonal and communication skills Ability and willingness to supervise medical officers and rotating registrars.
  • Ability to work under pressure and maintain a high standard of professionalism.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team..

DUTIES:

  • Clinical service delivery: in-patient and 16 hours per week commuted overtime.
  • Teaching: undergraduate students, nursing staff and rotating registrars / medical officers Research: Register for a MPhil in Paediatric Critical Care with the University of Cape Town and conduct a research project.
  • Involvement with existing research projects.
  • Administration: Monthly Registrar duty rosters and weekly Morbidity and Mortality meetings.
  • Competency to complete administrative tasks required of the position..

Appointment as Senior Registrar will be for a maximum contract period of 2 years.
Senior Registrars will function across health facilities, as per an agreed programme.
Consideration will be given to existing employees who are already on higher salary packages to retain their existing salary position, as personal.
As such they are entitled to receive pay progression.
Appointment as Senior Registrar will be on contract.
Employees in service who opt to continue with their pension benefits as Senior Registrar, 139 will be required to resign after completion of their registrarship should they not be successful for advertised Medical Sub-Specialist positions.
