The South African Navy’s Fleet Command Headquarters is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated professional to join their Technical Upkeep Section in the picturesque and historic Simon’s Town. Who Should Apply? The Key Requirements.

This role is designed for a seasoned professional. Before applying, ensure you meet the following mandatory requirements:

  • An appropriate Trade Test Certificate.
  • A minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience as an Artisan or Artisan Foreman.
  • A valid driver’s license.

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

The ideal candidate will possess a sophisticated blend of technical and managerial expertise, including:

  • Project, Supervisor, Contract, and Financial Management.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Public Service and its financial framework, including relevant administrative procedures, norms, and standards.
  • Knowledge of legal compliance, technical report writing, and technical consulting.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office (especially Excel and Word).
  • Proven advanced ability to communicate effectively in English (both written and verbal).
  • Advanced analytical thinking, research, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong leadership, supervision, interpersonal, and change management skills.

Your Role and Responsibilities

As the successful candidate, your duties will be critical to maintaining the Navy’s technical capabilities. You will be responsible for:

  • Investigating and compiling detailed Statements of Work (Specifications).
  • Managing the availability of repairable equipment to SAN repair facilities or external contractors.
  • Verifying quotations and monitoring repairs to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Carrying out the formal acceptance of repaired equipment and ensuring its return to the correct SAN unit or vessel.
  • Verifying authority documentation and managing mechanical equipment for refits, Docking and Essential Defects (DEDs), and Annual Maintenance Periods (AMPs).
  • Verifying Armscor Dockyard store requests.

Important Application Notes:

  • Applications must be submitted on the newly prescribed Z83 form (effective from 01 January 2021), obtainable from any Public Service Department or from the DPSA website.
  • The Z83 form must be originally signed, dated, and accompanied by a detailed CV.
  • Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications (not older than six months) before the interview.
  • Applications using the incorrect form Z83, lacking a signature, or missing a CV will be disqualified.

  • The successful candidate will be subjected to Personnel Suitability Checks (criminal record, citizenship, financial/asset record, qualification, and employment verification) and security clearance processes.
