The South African Navy is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Artisan (Vehicle Fitter) to join its team at the Transport Depot in the historic Simon’s Town. This is a fantastic opportunity for a qualified artisan to apply their expertise in a dynamic and essential environment, ensuring the operational readiness of the Navy’s vehicle fleet.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- An appropriate Trade Test Certificate.
- A minimum of 5 years of post-qualification experience as an Artisan.
- A valid driver’s license.
Skills and Knowledge Required:
- Qualified as a mechanical technician to conduct technical and mechanical repairs in compliance with the PFMA.
- Trade tested as a mechanical vehicle fitter in vehicle testing and fitting.
- Proven diagnostic experience is essential.
- Specialised knowledge of vehicle maintenance processes and procedures.
- Ability to assess quotations from Service Providers in terms of market-related costs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to conceptualise and initiate innovative approaches to optimise vehicle maintenance and utilisation.
- Strong planning, organising, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Knowledge of Legal Compliance, technical report writing, and computer-aided technical applications.
- Production knowledge and skills.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Obtaining quotations for vehicle services.
- Managing the maintenance of outsourcing requirements.
- Monitoring and finalising outsourced vehicle repairs.
- Managing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) in respect of safety and personnel.
- Handling the general administration of the mechanical workshop.

Important Notes for Applicants

- The Z83 form must be originally signed, dated, and accompanied by a detailed CV.
- Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications (not older than six months) before the interview.
- Applicants applying for more than one post must submit a separate Z83 form and documentation for each.
